Kuroten Infant Cubs
For children aged 6 – 7 years (School years 1 & 2)*
*We will consider taking children from 5 years old if they have already completed one full year at school and are in year 1

Our Infant classes are for children aged 6 -7 years old. They are 45 minutes long; just the right amount of time for young children to remain focused, learn and develop new skills and have plenty of fun along the way!
β
The popularity of karate education for kids is well-founded. As a parent you will see your children training their:β
Focus
Listening Skills
Self Confidence
Self Esteem
Coordination
Respect
Our age-appropriate syllabus ensures that the children learn karate techniques that are challenging but accessible.
β
They will learn how to punch and kick correctly as well as other key skills such how to fall without hurting themselves. Students of this age also begin learning life skills for self-protection: choosing safe strangers to ask for help in emergencies; memorising parent contact details; keeping safe distance; dealing with other children being aggressive or nasty and very importantly, sharing concerns with adults at an early stage if uncomfortable or anxious.
Parent Spectators
We would always encourage parents/guardians to stay and watch their child train, as then you can be fully aware of their progress and help them along the way. Please be aware that, for safeguarding purposes, in the Infant and Junior classes it is mandatory for each child to have a designated adult present in every class. Unfortunately, due to the space available, we are only able to accommodate one adult spectator per child and cannot accommodate any sibling spectators. The only exception to this is if you have another child in the subsequent or previous class. It is perfectly acceptable though for one parent/guardian to be supervising multiple children. The parents in our kids' classes often take turns!
Our Juniors are aged 7-11 years old and participate in classes that are an hour long. Your child will learn karate in a structured, safe environment which also provides a lot of fun and great exercise!
β
As they progress through the grades, training will help to build your child’s self-confidence and self-esteem as well as developing respect for themselves and others. Students enjoy learning the Japanese names for techniques drawing on the traditional karate values in their classes, such as:
Courtesy
Perseverance
Self-Control
Integrity
Respect
The Junior syllabus is more technical than the infants, ensuring that students can learn new skills and build upon them. As well as learning how to kick and punch, children also will learn traditional kata (forms), throwing and grappling techniques and will also learn escape and evasion skills.
β
As with the infant classes we also include an element of self-protection which incorporates age appropriate topics such as anti-bullying, boundary setting, stranger safety skills and how to make sensible choices as they become more independent.

These classes are suitable for young people aged 11 – 15 years in school years 7 - 11. We give them the opportunity to learn karate in a structured, safe environment whilst improving their fitness, making friends and having fun.
β
Classes are structured to teach students karate techniques and kata (forms) from a practical perspective. As well as striking, we teach ground work, grappling and throwing skills and also include elements of self-protection within lessons. Many students enjoy the impact work, hitting and kicking focus mitts or pads as they find it a great way to relieve stress whilst practicing what they have learnt.
β
Students do not need to worry if they are not fit or flexible as this will improve in time with frequent training. Our lessons are fun and reasonably informal which allow students to raise questions and learn from each other. Contact is controlled and nobody is asked to do anything that they are not comfortable doing.
β
As there are no young children within the lesson, we are able, when appropriate, to cover more realistic self-protection scenarios that young people may encounter within their daily lives. This will include anti-bullying, awareness and de-escalation as well as gaining an understanding of the law.
Students can often feel self-conscious starting something new, however karate can help to build self confidence and self-esteem both in and out of the dojo. It feels great to be learning and developing new skills and Cadets really enjoy the sense of achievement that they experience as they progress through the grading syllabus.
β
Whether they are a total beginner, or have previous martial arts experience, we would welcome them to come along and give it a try.
Parent Spectators
Cadets do not require parent spectators, however we do have some seats available for parents of children who need to have them in attendance.
These classes are suitable for students ages 15 years - Adult. The focus is on karate techniques and kata (forms) from a practical perspective. Adults study the kata in more detail and learn practical bunkai (applications) to develop a solid understanding of how to use each technique effectively. As well as striking, we teach ground work, grappling, and throwing skills in the context of both karate and self-protection.
